2015 Conference

The Dutch experience in North America, from the voyage of Henry Hudson to the recent migrations of dairy farmers, stretches across four centuries. Two major scholarly traditions—one focusing on New Netherland and the other on the 19th- and 20th-century immigration, settlement, and culture in the Midwest and beyond—have studied the Dutch experience with limited contact. “The Dutch in America Across the Centuries: Connections and Comparisons,” jointly sponsored by the New Netherland Institute (NNI) and the Association for the Advancement of Dutch-American Studies (AADAS), brings these two communities together.

Summary: The conference and its companion events will take place over three days, beginning on Thursday the 17th of September and concluding on Saturday the 19th. In addition to the two-day conference’s six sessions and fifteen speakers, there will be a tour of the Upper Hudson Valley’s Dutch heritage sites, an opening reception at the Fort Orange Club in Albany, and a dinner following Friday’s conference. Kathy Sheehan, mayor of Albany, will welcome all conference attendees to the opening reception at the Fort Orange Club.

Bus from Grand Rapids: For those interested, arrangements have been made for a bus to Albany leaving from Calvin College’s Prince Conference Center 7:00AM on Wednesday, September 16, arriving at the Hampton Inn in Albany around suppertime, leaving for Grand Rapids around 1:00 on Saturday, Sept. 19 and returning to Grand Rapids around midnight. The same coach will be used for the all day field trip to Dutch heritage sites in the Hudson Valley on Thursday, September 17. The cost for the Grand Rapids-Albany round trip is $100.

Tour: Led by guide Heleen Westerhuijs, co-author of Exploring Dutch New York: New York City, Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Delaware, we will explore a number of colonial Dutch heritage sites in the northern part of the Hudson Valley. The tour will begin with the Bronck Museum in Coxsackie, then explore and lunch in the Stockade District of Kingston (Wiltwijck), move on to a quick visit to Hurley (Nieuw Dorp) and, finally, get acquainted with Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz. We will depart from the Hampton Inn in Albany at 8:30 and return at 6:00. The cost will be $70 per person (includes admissions; lunch not included).

Lunch at the conference: Attendees will need to choose a lunch for both Friday and Saturday. Lunch is included in the price of admission to the conference.

Dinner on Friday night: Dinner will be at Yono’s in the Hampton Inn in Albany on Friday night at 7:00. The dinner will be a rijsttafel, a traditional Indonesian/Dutch meal that contains various dishes, similar to a buffet. The cost of dinner is $75 per person and includes complementary red or white wine.
